Zen of Moving Part 1 – 7 Tips to Keep it Under Control

Tracy McEvoy, Maple Leaf Self Storage Director, sat down with Soraiya Kaya, professional organizer, to discuss helpful tips for surviving your move. With the help of these seven tips, discover how to maintain a ‘zen’ state of mind amidst the chaos! When you think of moving, the last thing you think of is an easy, calming and masterful process. Most often, the words complicated, stressful and disorganized are much more suitable. Being the daughter of a retired branch banker, I have done my share of packing and moving over the years and, while I am not an expert, I have certainly earned some merit points.Even so, I thought that there must be some things that we can do to make the process a little less stressful and perhaps even enjoyable. With this goal in mind, I recently sat down with Soraiya Kara, the owner of POSabilities Personal Organizing and Chair of The Professional Organizers of Canada to get some expert tips. So, what can you do to foster a little Zen in your moving process?

1. Start early and have a plan

If you know that you are going to be moving in the future, start early and tackle things step by step. Some families find it useful to create a moving plan on Excel that lists the various tasks that need to be done and when they should be done by. Get the entire family involved by assigning tasks to each person. Even young children can help by putting toys into bins and towels into boxes.

2. Relax and get comfortable

Why sit in the den or garage and go through boxes when you can do the same thing in front of your cozy fireplace. Put on some nice music or a favourite movie that you know by heart. Light some candles and pour yourself a glass of wine. Don’t overcomplicate things and start with three boxes: Keep, Recycle and Donate. This is an excellent start.

3. Use the Mirror Test

We often keep things because they were given to us by a special family member years ago and we feel obligated to keep them. When you pick up this item, whether it is a painting of a piece of china, look at your reaction in a mirror. Do you smile or screw up your face a little? Give yourself permission to get rid of things. Just because your aunt gave you the china does not mean that you must keep it forever. If you are not in love with the china and do not enjoy using it, you are not remembering her in the right way.

4. Don’t forget the rewards

If you have a large project to get through, give yourself a reward once the project is done. This could be going for a massage or manicure or perhaps playing a round of golf. If your project involves the entire family, like organizing the garage, pick something that the entire family would enjoy. Head out to the theatre for a movie night or order in a special meal that everyone likes.

5. Label and colour-code boxes

Keep things simple for your family and the movers by labelling and colour-coding each box. You can find colour-coded labels at most Vancouver self storage facilities or you can make your own. Make sure that you label the boxes on two sides, and not the top, so that you can easily find your box when needed. In your new home, use painter’s tape to label the various rooms so that the movers know where to place your boxes.If you are planning to place some of your boxes in a self storage facility, stack your boxes in the unit by colour-code. This will help you locate what you need much faster.

6. Create a memory box

We often hold onto things because they evoke special memories and we are afraid that we will lose them if the object is not around. Consider placing some of these items into a special memory box that you can keep and go through when you wish. This could be a fun project for children. If the item is very large, awkward or no longer needed, you could take a photo of it and place it in a special scrapbook. Often, just seeing the photo will be enough to bring back the memories.When helping my mother-in-law move last year, I came across a hunk of shapeless, melted foam on a trophy base. There was a rock tuck to the top of the foam. When I showed her this item, she broke into a big smile. Apparently, the object was a trophy that her boys gave to their dad for Father’s Day 40 years ago. He accidentally left it on the sidewalk and it melted and picked up a rock from the driveway. They had kept it for 40 years because it triggered a special memory. We took a photo of it.

7. Stay somewhere else for a few days

If you are able, stay somewhere else for a couple of days, especially if you have children and pets. This way, you do not have to worry about packing linens, pillows, dishes and other items just before the mover arrive. Arrange for your children to have a sleepover at a friend’s house and put the pets in daycare for a couple of days. Moving is extremely difficult on pets and you will also feel more relaxed if you know that your children are enjoying themselves elsewhere.So, if you are considering a move in the coming year, reflect on these tips and see if any will work for you. With a little planning and some organization, it is possible to remove some of the stress and make the moving experience more pleasant for your entire family. In the ‘ Zen of Moving: 7 Tips to Keep it Under Control ’ we shared some great ideas on how to make your moving experience a little less stressful. Our readers loved the ideas, so we sat down with Soraiya Kara, the owner of POSabilities Personal Organizing , to gather a few more creative tips.So here’s the scenario. You have your movers organized and the packing has started. You are diligently using some of the great ideas from ‘Zen of Moving – Part 1’ to keep the process moving forward with minimal stress. But in the back of your mind, you know that moving day is quickly approaching and there is no way to avoid it. So, what other things can you do to keep the Zen alive? 1. Plan a space for everything No one likes moving big, heavy furniture around. By making a floor plan, you can save yourself the heavy lifting, and leave that to the pros – your movers. Start with a floor plan or use graph paper and map out how your existing furniture is going to fit in your new space. You may realize that some of your items may not fit in the way that you imagined. Consider donating these items to a local charity or passing them on to a friend. By getting rid of unwanted or unnecessary furniture before moving day, there will be less items to transport and less cost. Print a copy of the floor plan for your movers so that they will know exactly where to place the large items, decreasing their work load and yours. 2. Empty the pantry Getting rid of as many items as possible before a move is always a good idea and this includes food items. Take a look in your pantry, cupboards and fridge and throw out items that have dubious ‘best before’ dates or that you are likely to never use. With the remaining items, build some meals for the days leading up to the move. By using what you have in stock, you will save precious time and have fewer perishable items to transport on moving day. 3. Unpack this first We all have our comfort items which make life a little easier. You may require a freshly-brewed mocha in the morning or a special toothbrush. Determine what these items are and place them in a few boxes labelled ‘unpack first’. Consider your personal items, toiletries, and any kitchen tools that you know you will need right away. You may also want to transport these items yourself, to make sure you know exactly where they end up. 4. Keep calm and get a sitter Small children and pets can often find packing and moving very stressful. The chaos and the noise create disruption to their daily routine and they may be better off at a temporary home. Consider having younger children stay with a relative or close family friend for one or more days during your move. This will free your hands and allow you time to focus on getting things done. 5. Clear the mess Once you have unpacked, you will still have empty boxes to deal with. Broken-down cardboard boxes can be listed on a site such as Craigslist or donated to a charitable organization looking for storage and packing supplies. Another alternative is to use plastic bins from SayNoToBoxes or FrogBox which you can rent for varying periods of time.So, if you are considering a move in the near future, reflect on these tips and see if any will work for you. There is no question that moving can be stressful, but with a little planning and organization, you will be able to keep the calm.

7 Halloween Trick or Treating Safety Tips

Trick or treating is always fun for children and young teenagers. They can dress up to be their favourite superheroes or princesses, enjoy parties, and eat lots of sugary treats. On the other hand, Halloween night can be dangerous if kids and parents aren’t careful. Take a look at these safety tips before heading out.

Children going with parents:

Dress for the weather. The last thing you want for your precious little one to bring back is sickness
A bag or pillowcase with reflective tape for the candies
Stay on one side of the street. Work your way up one side of the street then start on the other
Well-lit houses. Don’t visit houses that are not well lit or go inside stranger’s house
Costume choice – weapons – no toy guns and ensure swords are soft and flexible
Costume choice – glow sticks or reflective tape – they help them see and be seen by others and drivers
Examine all treats before letting them consume

Young teenagers going without parents:

Set areas or route they can visit
Have them travel in groups
Set a curfew for them
Minimizes risk of eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses
Wear well-fitting masks and costumes to avoid injuries
Ensure they have a flashlight and possibly a cellphone for emergency needs

Helping Urban Native Youth One Box at a Time

The Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA) is located near our Commercial Drive self storage facility and has been a valued client of Maple Leaf since 2014. Recently, we were delighted to support their annual Xmas Hampers program by making a donation of 140 Maple Leaf moving boxes .

For over 25 years, UNYA has been a great community asset for local First Nations youth. Currently, UNYA provides more than 20 different programs for youth living in the Metro Vancouver area. Programs address a variety of youth-specific topics, including education and training, personal support, live-in programs and sports and recreation.One of UNYA’s lesser known initiatives is their annual Xmas Hampers program. In 2007, the UNYA team decided to reallocate its annual Christmas party budget in order to create the Xmas Hamper program. The purpose of the program was to assist First Nations youth and their families in need. The program takes place in January, when family resources are often stretched thin, and has been a huge success. In fact, the Xmas Hamper Program has grown from initially helping 50 families in 2007 to helping 140 in 2015!The hampers include a range of items including fruits and vegetables, canned goods, bread and cereal bars as well as educational literature about health, nutrition and parenting.We want to thank UNYA for giving us the opportunity to witness first-hand the creation of these hampers. Many families find it very difficult to feed their families throughout the year. It can be even more difficult during the holiday season when there are more bills to pay and greater expectations. We wanted to find a way to help. Starting today, we will be conducting a food drive at each of our 12 Maple Leaf Self Storage locations. Our goal is to collect as many non-perishable food items as possible to help support local food banks.Food bank use across Canada continues to rise according to HungerCount 2014 (a report published by Food Banks Canada). In March of this year, 841,191 people in Canada used food banks. In British Columbia alone, 97,369 people used food banks, with children making up 30.8% of the total. Only Ontario and Quebec saw more usage, with 374,698 and 156,895 respectively. Unfortunately, food bank usage has increased by 25% across Canada since 2008. With the number on the rise, it’s important for us to come together to help the families in our communities. Please help us help others.

Community Spotlight – Starlight Children’s Foundation of BC

When Maple Leaf Self Storage was challenged to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge this past summer, we decided to put a ‘Twist’ on the challenge and to donate to a local grassroots charity. We chose Starlight Children’s Foundation of BC to receive our donation of $500.

I sat down with Heather Burnett, Regional Coordinator for the BC Chapter of Starlight Children’s Foundation, to present our donation and to learn more about the valuable work that they are doing. Starlight has been one of Maple Leaf’s community partners since 2010.Starlight Children’s Foundation transforms the lives of serious or chronically ill children and their families by providing a range of support throughout their journey from hospital to home.Throughout the year, Starlight collects donations of new toys, clothes and gift cards for their Joy of Sharing program. All of these items are stored at our Vancouver Self Storage facility on Commercial Drive. Joy of Sharing is intended to help families who are experiencing financial hardship and who may not be able to buy gifts for their children otherwise. This year, the Joy of Sharing event will be held on December 13th. In preparation for the event, Heather and her team of Starlight “elves” will transform a donated space into a magical toy bazaar. On the day of the event, while the children are busy playing games and crafting, parents will be able to select a few special gifts and gift cards for their children and families. And with the help of the Starlight “elves”, the gifts will be wrapped and placed in the family’s vehicle without the kids ever knowing!Last year, Starlight had 70 families participate in the Joy of Sharing . This year, they are expecting around 80 families and they need your help to be able to provide a memorable experience for each child. Starlight does not receive any government or United Way funding. Instead, all funding and gifts-in-kind come from local businesses and individuals.How to get involved:

Now in its 8th edition, Eco Fashion Week has grown from humble beginnings into a fabulous three day event with involvement from local fashion heavy-hitters such as Holt Renfrew , Obakki and Value Village . The event’s goal is two pronged: one, to shift the fashion industry towards healthier design and distribution methods, and two, to inform fashion shoppers about ways to dress their best, while also making ethical and eco-conscious decisions.

Laroche is inclusive in her agenda, saying “there isn’t just one way to be ‘eco’.
