Residential Storage: More Space for the Life You Live
Home is where life happens. A little extra space can make it easier to enjoy.
Think of residential storage as extra space for the home you already love. Keep everyday essentials close and store the things you use less often, so you can park in the garage, welcome guests, or create a comfortable home office. Enjoy a more organized home without giving up useful or meaningful possessions. Storage also gives you breathing room when life changes. You can prepare for a move in stages, clear space for a renovation, or take your time deciding what belongs in a smaller home. Whether you need space temporarily or for the longer term, personal storage helps you stay organized and move forward at your own pace.
Whether you’re clearing crowded closets, getting ready for a move, or making room for something new, Maple Leaf Self Storage gives you a convenient place for the belongings that matter. With locations across British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, a range of unit sizes, and friendly teams ready to help, finding extra space is simple.
Reasons to Use Self Storage
- Clear the clutter - Free up crowded closets, cupboards, and spare rooms by storing belongings you want to keep but don’t need every day. A nearby storage unit gives those belongings a place of their own, freeing up room for everyday living.
- Store seasonal items - Keep holiday decorations, patio furniture, winter sports equipment, and camping gear out of the way until their season comes around.
- Simplify your move. Remove excess furniture and personal items to help rooms feel open and inviting for listing photos, showings, and open houses. Pack non-essential items ahead of moving day, bridge the gap between possession dates, or unpack gradually as you settle into your new home.
- Create room for renovations. Clear furniture and household belongings from work areas, keeping them away from renovation dust and activity without crowding the rest of your home.
- Downsize at your own pace. Give yourself time to decide what to keep, pass along, donate, or sell as you transition to a smaller home.

- Make space for restoration work. During repairs after a leak, flood, or fire, store belongings that have been properly cleaned and dried while your home is being restored.
- Adapt to a changing household. Make room for a baby, combine households, or turn a spare bedroom into a home office without having to make immediate decisions about every belonging.
- Store between school terms or while travelling. Keep furniture and personal belongings in one place during summer breaks, co-op placements, or extended time away.
- Make room for hobbies and collections. From vinyl records and comic books to sports memorabilia, collections can outgrow your shelves. Store pieces you’re not currently displaying so you can enjoy your favourites at home and swap them as your interests change.
- Keep family keepsakes and inherited belongings. Give meaningful possessions a place to stay while you decide how to use them or arrange to share them with family.

Residential Storage FAQ
What is self storage?
Self storage is a private space you rent month to month to keep belongings outside your home. Maple Leaf Self Storage offers units from 25 to 400 square feet, so you can store anything from a few boxes to the contents of a large house. People use it during moves and renovations, or long term for seasonal items, furniture, and hobby gear.
Can I use storage if I'm not moving?
Yes, and most storage needs have nothing to do with a move. Many tenants rent a small unit to free up space at home for holiday decorations, seasonal clothing, sports equipment, tools, or furniture they don't use every day. If your garage, closet, or spare room is crowded, a storage unit can fix that.
What size storage unit do I need?
Our units range from 25 to 400 square feet. As a rough guide:
- 25-50 sq ft (closet size): boxes, seasonal items, luggage, sports gear, or a few small furniture pieces
- 75-100 sq ft: the contents of a studio or one-bedroom apartment
- 150-200 sq ft: a two-bedroom home, including a sofa, a bed, and appliances
- 300-400 sq ft: a three- to four-bedroom home, or business inventory and large equipment
If you'll need to reach items while they're stored, go up one size so you can leave an aisle. Available sizes vary by location, so check your nearest Maple Leaf Self Storage facility for details.
What household items can I store?
You can store furniture, mattresses, appliances, clothing, books, kitchenware, holiday decorations, tools, and clean, dry sports equipment. Everything should be clean and fully dry before it goes in. Items that are fragile, valuable, or sensitive to temperature may need extra care (see our questions on climate control and collectibles below).
What items can't I store?
You can't store perishable food, flammable or explosive materials (propane, gasoline, paint, fireworks, ammunition, batteries), hazardous substances, illegal goods, or living things (including plants and animals). If you're not sure about an item, ask us before you pack it.
Can I rent storage short term, or if I'm not sure how long I'll need it?
Yes. Our units are rented on a 4-week rental periods with no long-term commitment. That makes storage a good fit for moves, renovations, or any transition where your timeline may change.
Can I store collectibles and sentimental items?
Yes, with some extra planning. Keepsakes and collections often need stable temperature and humidity, so a climate-controlled unit is usually the right choice. Valuable or delicate pieces may also need specialist packing and appropriate insurance coverage. Maple Leaf Self Storage offers Tenant Protection plans provided by Cowan Tenant Shield that covers up to $10,000 in value. Tell us what you're storing and we'll recommend the right unit.
