Maple Leaf Self Storage Holiday Food Drive. More Food. Less Hunger.

Community

Many families find it very difficult to feed their families throughout the year. It can be even more difficult during the holiday season when there are more bills to pay and greater expectations. We wanted to find a way to help. Starting today, we will be conducting a food drive at each of our 12 Maple Leaf Self Storage locations. Our goal is to collect as many non-perishable food items as possible to help support local food banks.Food bank use across Canada continues to rise according to HungerCount 2014 (a report published by Food Banks Canada). In March of this year, 841,191 people in Canada used food banks. In British Columbia alone, 97,369 people used food banks, with children making up 30.8% of the total. Only Ontario and Quebec saw more usage, with 374,698 and 156,895 respectively. Unfortunately, food bank usage has increased by 25% across Canada since 2008. With the number on the rise, it’s important for us to come together to help the families in our communities. Please help us help others. Helping Urban Native Youth One Box at a Time

The Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA) is located near our Commercial Drive self storage facility and has been a valued client of Maple Leaf since 2014. Recently, we were delighted to support their annual Xmas Hampers program by making a donation of 140 Maple Leaf moving boxes. For over 25 years, UNYA has been a great community asset for local First Nations youth. Currently, UNYA provides more than 20 different programs for youth living in the Metro Vancouver area. Programs address a variety of youth-specific topics, including education and training, personal support, live-in programs and sports and recreation. One of UNYA’s lesser known initiatives is their annual Xmas Hampers program. In 2007, the UNYA team decided to reallocate its annual Christmas party budget in order to create the Xmas Hamper program.  The purpose of the program was to assist First Nations youth and their families in need. The program takes place in January, when family resources are often stretched thin, and has been a huge success. In fact, the Xmas Hamper Program has grown from initially helping 50 families in 2007 to helping 140 in 2015!The hampers include a range of items including fruits and vegetables, canned goods, bread and cereal bars as well as educational literature about health, nutrition and parenting. We want to thank UNYA for giving us the opportunity to witness first-hand the creation of these hampers. In a matter of a few hours, all 140 boxes were packed and ready for transport! To find out more about the Urban Native Youth Association, check out Facebook and Twitter. ...

Children’s Wish Foundation

We are proud to announce that Children’s Wish Foundation of Alberta and NWT has joined the Maple Leaf Self Storage Community Partners Program. We are excited to support the wide range of activities Children’s Wish facilitates by providing storage space at our Sunridge location in Calgary.“The Children’s Wish Foundation is a uniquely Canadian charity that helps Canadian children, families and communities by granting the favourite wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. With every wish they grant, they create moments of joy that ease the pain of a child, give respite to the child’s family, and connect healthcare professionals and communities in that burning wish of hope. Every wish is as unique as the child making it, from finally getting to cuddle with grandparents who live far away to hitting a puck with a favourite hockey player. In the often painful life of a seriously ill child, these wishes make a tremendous difference.” Children’s WishNow is the time to help Children’s Wish make dreams come true. If you would like to get involved they have several volunteer opportunities available or you can make a donation on the website. We are proud to support some great local organizations, find out more about the Community Partners Program. ...

Firefighters give kids a great start to their day

The Coquitlam Firefighters Charitable Society (CFCS) runs many community-based programs. One of its programs is the Nutritional Snack Program which provides nutritional snacks to kids at the Rochester Elementary school in Coquitlam. The program provides breakfast and snacks for 50-60 kids three times per week. The CFCS hopes to expand its program to additional schools in the coming year and has been raising funds through a number of initiatives. Most recently, the CFCS held their annual Vintage Vegas Bash held at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam. Click on the link to watch a short video. When our Maple Leaf Self Storage team members heard about the Nutritional Snack Program they loved the idea and wanted to help. Over the course of a month, they raised $300 for the program. Recently, the firefighters came by the store to accept the donation. The Lougheed team was thrilled with the visit! We would like to thank the Coquitlam Firefighters for everything they do to keep the community safe! Maple Leaf’s Back to School Supply Drive Helps Local Kids!

Our inaugural Back to School Supply Drive wrapped up recently. Assisted by our partner, Office Move Pro, we completed the pick-ups and deliveries in one busy but fantastic day. Between our 10 BC Locations, 2 Alberta Locations and Office Move Pro’s BC office, we collected a total of 23 Medium Maple Leaf moving boxes filled with much needed school supplies. We delivered supplies to four different, yet equally grateful, recipients in BC. Our first stop was in Richmond at the Cambie Community Centre where the supplies were divided between the Out of School Care and Preschool Programs. We’re told the kids were very excited to receive the new supplies and couldn’t wait to start using them! Our second delivery was at the SOS Children’s Village in Surrey. Here, we were able to provide some needed art supplies, including crayons, paint, markers, construction paper and colouring books. Our third delivery took us to Central Elementary in Coquitlam where we met Principal McCutcheon and snapped a quick picture while talking about how the supplies would be used by the school. Our final stop was at Hasting Elementary in Vancouver. Teachers greeted us to tell us how in-demand new school supplies are and how appreciative the community was.The pick-ups and deliveries would not have been possible if it wasn’t for Office Move Pro who generously volunteered their time and vehicle to help make the day happen. If you have an office move on the horizon look no further than this great company. We can vouch for their outstanding customer service! In Calgary, we made deliveries to three different schools, Bowness High School, James Fowler High School and Crescent Heights High School. One of the donations we received included hundreds of binders. The binders, along with other supplies, were welcomed by the three high schools who will no doubt put them to good use.A big shout out goes out to all Maple Leaf Self Storage customers who generously donated supplies to all 12 of our stores. We couldn’t have ...

Community Spotlight – Starlight Children’s Foundation of BC

When Maple Leaf Self Storage was challenged to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge this past summer, we decided to put a ‘Twist’ on the challenge and to donate to a local grassroots charity. We chose Starlight Children’s Foundation of BC to receive our donation of $500. I sat down with Heather Burnett, Regional Coordinator for the BC Chapter of Starlight Children’s Foundation, to present our donation and to learn more about the valuable work that they are doing. Starlight has been one of Maple Leaf’s community partners since 2010.Starlight Children’s Foundation transforms the lives of serious or chronically ill children and their families by providing a range of support throughout their journey from hospital to home.Throughout the year, Starlight collects donations of new toys, clothes and gift cards for their Joy of Sharing program. All of these items are stored at our Vancouver Self Storage facility on Commercial Drive. Joy of Sharing is intended to help families who are experiencing financial hardship and who may not be able to buy gifts for their children otherwise. This year, the Joy of Sharing event will be held on December 13th.  In preparation for the event, Heather and her team of Starlight “elves” will transform a donated space into a magical toy bazaar.  On the day of the event, while the children are busy playing games and crafting, parents will be able to select a few special gifts and gift cards for their children and families.  And with the help of the Starlight “elves”, the gifts will be wrapped and placed in the family’s vehicle without the kids ever knowing!Last year, Starlight had 70 families participate in the Joy of Sharing. This year, they are expecting around 80 families and they need your help to be able to provide a memorable experience for each child. Starlight does not receive any government or United Way funding. Instead, all funding and gifts-in-kind come from local businesses and individuals. How to get involved: Donate Donate a new toy, new item ...

Puttin’ on the Eco: Fashion in Vancouver Gets Green

Myriam Laroche (centre), founder of Eco Fashion Week at the Fairmont Waterfront with Karin Koonings (left) and Sara Gaugl (right) of Value Village. Can fashion be eco-friendly? Myriam Laroche, founder of Eco Fashion Week, says ‘of course’!From April 27-29, Laroche and her team presented fashion shows, event galas, educational forums and press events that showed a love of fashion and a passion for protecting the earth can indeed be a beautiful combination. Now in its 8th edition, Eco Fashion Week has grown from humble beginnings into a fabulous three day event with involvement from local fashion heavy-hitters such as Holt Renfrew, Obakkiand Value Village. The event’s goal is two pronged: one, to shift the fashion industry towards healthier design and distribution methods, and two, to inform fashion shoppers about ways to dress their best, while also making ethical and eco-conscious decisions. Laroche is inclusive in her agenda, saying “there isn’t just one way to be ‘eco’. We all need to make choices that suit us, and at the same time show an awareness for how our choices affect the environment we all depend on.” Whether that choice is to wear all vintage articles, or to buy new articles at Holt Renfrew with part proceeds to the Obakki Foundation, Laroche shows that we can all make a difference in our own way. Congratulations to the Eco Fashion Week team on another successful edition!
